I smiled when I first saw the above comic created by Antonio Meza, making light of Artificial Intelligence or (AI). While simplifying complex tasks, critics caution there are risks with its use. These include losing the elements of control, innovation, creativity as well as the “human touch.”
We all love the capability of technology to provide directions while traveling, and the quick unlimited information at our fingertips. In my work as a personal historian, I can now upload hours of interviews and within a matter of minutes, have an accurate transcript. This task once took hours to complete.
However, there are drawbacks to any technology, and all the consequences of AI are still unknown. We cannot rely on tech for creating the “magic” and personal touch that only a human being can provide. This is especially true in my work creating life story books. Here are a few examples:
Before starting a project, I first sit down and ask a person about their ideas and goals. Then, I speak a bit about what it’s like to work with me, so we can decide if we are a good match. Rapport is imperative to a mutually satisfying partnership and a successful project.
When speaking about one’s life and experiences, it is imperative to feel safe and validated, and that trust continues to grow as we work together. The structure of the interview and topics covered are planned, but there is always room for spontaneity. Follow-up with poignant and intuitive questions “off the script” is also important.
I use your “voice” or authentic way of speaking to write your story. Again, this is a very human and vital part of the process. While life question prompts and voice recording apps are good ways to capture quick memories, the magic happens in a one-on-one interview.
Have you considered saving your own, your parents or your grandparents history? There’s no time like the present. I’d be delighted to talk to you about how I can help—by being fully present—and establishing the human connection where your story can unfold naturally and comfortably.
